Here is a tool that helps illustrate the angle of shadows from the Sun. For this project it was used to estimate the angle for each example frame.

This footage was collected from 4pm to 8:30pm, with the camera pointed due East. Cirrostratus clouds were present the duration of the shoot.

Particular areas of interest are the balcony (left), light post, and tables.

4:40 pm, Sun Angle: ~33°, Mostly Sunny

Here you can see noticeably hard shadows cast by the light pole and umbrella. The mural on the right is lit by bounced light from the building on the left and the ground.

5:30 pm, Sun Angle: ~29°, Partly Sunny

A dense patch of Cirrostratus clouds now cover the sun. Shadows become lighter but maintain length and become slightly soft at their edges. This is most noticeable with the shadow against the white building (far left).

5:45 pm, Sun Angle: ~28°, Mostly Sunny

Nearly full sunlight returns as the clouds pass.

With Maya raytraced shadows, the shadows become blurred the further away from the object. This is apparent when comparing the balcony shadow (soft) to the umbrella shadow (hard).

6:18 pm, Sun Angle: ~23°, Sunny

Shadows are noticeably longer in this shot.

Notice the shadow of the balcony. The support beam closest to the ground is sharper than the furthest. Due to it's small size, the umbrella and chairs maintain their sharpness.

7:08 pm, Sun Angle: ~16°, Sunny

The mural on the right is illuminated more as the angle of the sun carries the light closer to it's base. Details on the white building such as the stars and bricks are more pronounced.

7:16 pm, Sun Angle: ~14°, Mostly Sunny

The color temperature has become noticeably warmer as the sun approches the horizon. Distant trees now appear more dimensional with high contrast shadows.

Notice the nearly perfect alignment of the umbrella pole with the balcony support beam shadow. This alignment will vary depending on the season and time of day.

7:36 pm, Sun Angle: ~10°, Mostly Sunny

The white building is nearly flat. The eye is drawn to the right of the frame along the motion vector caused by the prominant support beam shadow. It is more difficult to discern the shape of the sidewalk with the complex shadows.

The texture of the grass and palm tree trunks in the mural are most prominent in this shot due to the angle of the sun.

8:05 pm, Sun Angle: ~4°, Mostly Sunny

The ground and sidewalk are nearly flat. The light post returns in this shot with a sliver of light near the base. The shadow under the awning has nearly disappeared due to the building's bounce light.

8:16 pm, Sun Angle: ~2°, Mostly Sunny

This final shot shows the intense warm colors against the trees on the horizon, contrasting against the cooler foreground encompassed entirely by shadows. Most of the foreground details have been lost and washed out from a lack of lighting.
